World of Warcraft players recently experienced a massive week long event in preparation for the release of WotLK. This involved a zombie plague, created by the Lich King, spreading through the world of Azeroth to both players and NPCs.

The plague built up through several phases:

WotLK Zombie Invasion

Phase 1

Suspicious Crates in Booty could be looted, immediately giving the player the plague. You could also get the WotLK zombie plague (You’re Infected!) by standing in a zombie’s disease cloud, or by being hit by a zombie.

Once you are infected you can be cured by any class who can cure diseases (Priest, Paladin, Shaman), or by Argent Healers that are now located throughout the world.

You have 10 minutes before the plague turns you into a zombie. You can also immediately be turned into a zombie if you are killed by a zombie.

Once you transform into a zombie you gain several abilities:

Beckon Groan – Brings up to 4 zombies that are not currently in combat to you.

Lurch – AoE buff that causes all zombies in the area to move more quickly, and removes any crowd-control or movement impairing effects on them.

Mangle -Reduces your target’s armor by 3% and increases your next attack damage by 20.

Retch – A targetable AoE that heals all zombie in the area, and slows all humanoids.

Zombie Explosion – A kamikaze ability, destroying you and infecting non-zombies in the area with the plague.

When you are a zombie your health decays over time, however you can gain health back by attacking living characters and NPCs. You can also use your Retch ability to regenerate lost health.

Players infected with the zombie plague also all speak [Zombie]. This temporarily allowed cross-faction communication between Alliance and Horde players.

Phase 2

WotLK Zombie Invasion Plagued Roach

WotLK Zombie Invasion Plagued Roach

The Suspicious Crates spawned in all major cities, along with Plagued Roaches. Killing the plagued roaches or looting the crates immediately gives you the zombie disease.

Phase 3

In the third phase “Plagued Residents” (NPC zombies) began spawning outside of major cities. The plague timer was reduced from 10 minutes to 5 minutes, and the radius of the zombie explosion ability was greatly increased.

Phase 4

The infection debuff timer was reduced again. Now it is 2 minutes, down from 5 minutes. The Naxxaramas Scourge Invasion event has begun again. There are now invasions of Scourge all across Azeroth.

All of the rare bosses from the previous Scourge event are again located in their respective instances.

All of these bosses have unique loot tables with rare items.

A new boss was added to Karazhan, Prince Tenris Mirkblood. There is a quest to kill him located at Light’s Hope Chapel in the Eastern Plague Lands.

Phase 5

The zombie disease debuff timer was reduced to one minute. Nearly all of the Argent Healers have disappeared, leaving the plague and zombies to overrun every city in the game.

Grand Apothecary Putress was introduced to Shattrath City. He requires you to get a sample of this new Scourge plague which has a slightly different questline ending for each race. For the Forsaken you take a sample to the Royal Apothecary Society in Undercity for further study.

Phase 6 – Finale

The zombie plague ended. The Scourge invasion and Tenris Mirkblood will remain for a week. Blizzard says the WotLK opening event is not over, but the zombie plague is… for now.

Blood Elf Cosplay - BlizzCon 2008

Blood Elf Cosplay - BlizzCon 2008

We have a bunch more information Blizzard has released at BlizzCon 2008 for WotLK. There are major interface changes coming, along with very new and interesting concepts for PvE and PvP.

Here is a recap of some of the biggest WoW information since our last BlizzCon WotLK update:

  • Ground mounts will no longer automatically dismount when you enter the water after patch 3.1. They will now be able to swim!
  • 10-man and 25-man raid sets will share the same set bonuses, so you will be able to complete your sets with pieces of both combined.
  • 3.1, the first content patch for WotLK, is already complete and ready for release.
  • As previously mentioned, the dual-spec feature coming in WotLK will allow you to switch specs between fights in a raid. This feature will be great for switching between a party and solo spec while leveling in WotLK.

There was also some new information and ideas for PvP in WotLK:

  • Blizzard plans on adding an experience reward for battlegrounds, allowing you to level by doing just battlegrounds. Will this remove twinking? So far there is no official word.
  • There is a new Battleground rating system in development to hopefully make battlegrounds more competitive and fairly matched again.
  • You will soon be able to queue for Arenas and Battlegrounds from anywhere in the game world (sounds similar to Warhammer’s system).
  • The new WotLK instanced battleground, Strand of the Ancients, is getting updated from a 10 versus 10 to 15 versus 15. Additionally, they are doubling the number of siege weapons and vehicles available for players to use.

J!nx, the official WoW merchandise partner, is releasing a new murloc plushie.

BlizzCon was this week, and Blizzard has release a little bit of new information about what we can expect to see after the release of WotLK. The highlights include:

  • 3.1 WotLK patch will add Ulduar, a 10 and 25 man, level 80 raid instance.
  • 3.2 patch will add a secret, unannounced raid instance.
  • 3.3 will likely add the Icecrown Citadel raid instance, Arthas’ new home.
  • 3.3 will also conclude the Ashbringer storyline.
  • Duel-spec system is definitely coming. This will allow you to change between two specs even between fights in a raid. You will not be allowed to change specs during arena matches, however.
  • After adding the duel-spec interface, Blizzard would also like to add an ItemRack-like mod to the default WotLK interface.
  • Blizzard plans on adding a dance studio, which not only will allow characters to choose new dances, but build their own.
  • Improve the guild management and organization tools.
  • Possibly implement guild rankings based on PvE progress (similar to WoWjutsu?)

Looks like we have a lot to look forward to after the release of WotLK.

Here are some suggested specs to help guide you leveling as a Death Knight. Focusing on the Death Knight’s Blood tree when leveling will help you minimize downtime through all of your self-healing abilities, along with still providing a high level of damage.

WotLK Death Knight - Ebon Hold

WotLK Death Knight - Ebon Hold

Death Knight Leveling Spec (Blood)

Blood Spec Link

Two of the must-have abilities in this spec are Butchery and Vendetta. They return a huge amount of runic power and health every time you kill a mob that grants experience. It would be wise to include at least those two abilities in any Death Knight Leveling build.

Mark of Blood is also available early on, which should all but remove your need to ever need to eat or bandage while leveling. This provides a huge advantage to other classes and even other Death Knight specs. While not available until much later in the tree, Bloodworms and Vampiric Blood help improve your leveling time significantly. If you find you aren’t ever losing enough health to need Rune Tap, you can drop it for higher damage abilities in either the Blood or Unholy trees.

Blood (65 points)
    2/2 Butchery
    3/3 Subversion
    5/5 Blade Barrier
    5/5 Bladed Armor
    3/3 Scent of Blood
    2/2 Two-Handed Weapon Specialization
    1/1 Rune Tap
    5/5 Dark Conviction
    3/3 Death Rune Mastery
    3/3 Improved Rune Tap
    3/3 Vendetta
    3/3 Bloody Strikes
3/3 Veteran of the Third War
    1/1 Mark of Blood
    3/3 Bloody Vengeance
    3/3 Bloodworms
    2/2 Blood Aura
    5/5 Sudden Doom
    1/1 Vampiric Blood
    3/3 Might of Mograine
    5/5 Blood Gorged
    1/1 Dancing Rune Weapon

Frost (0 points)
    None

Unholy (6 points)
    2/2 Vicious Strikes
    3/3 Morbidity
    1/2 Epidemic

Death Knight Leveling Spec (Unholy)

Unholy Spec Link

Again, this spec relies on Vendetta and Butchery for the health and runic power restoration while leveling. Instead of being as oriented toward melee damage, however, the Unholy spec focuses on Ghouls, magical damage, and Area-of-Effect abilities (primarily Corpse Explosion).

Good variation of this build are possible by going deeper into the Blood tree, possibly including Rune Tap and Bladed Armor, depending on your play style and downtime between pulls. Alternatively, dropping Two-Handed Weapon Specialization and Dark Conviction would allow you to get some of the more powerful talents deep in the Unholy tree.

Blood (19 points)
    2/2 Butchery
    3/3 Subversion
    5/5 Blade Barrier
    3/3 Scent of Blood
    3/3 Death Rune Mastery
    3/3 Vendetta

Frost (0 points)
    None

Unholy (45 points)
    2/2 Vicious Strikes
    3/3 Morbidity
    2/2 Epidemic
    3/3 Ravenous Dead
    3/3 Outbreak
    5/5 Necrosis
    1/1 Corpse Explosion
    3/3 Blood-Caked Blade
    1/1 Shadow of Death
    1/1 Summon Gargoyle
    5/5 Impurity
    3/3 Reaping
    1/1 Master of Ghouls
    5/5 Desecration
    3/3 Crypt Fever
    3/3 Ebon Plaguebringer
    1/1 Scourge Strike

Conclusion

Choosing a spec is largely comes down to personal preference and play-style. However, some abilities such as Butchery and Vendetta are going to greatly improve the speed you can level no matter which tree and abilities you prefer. Even if you are not a fan of the melee oriented Blood tree, if you plan on leveling solo, you should consider it a very strong option if you plan on leveling as quickly and easily as possible.

Note: Some of the listed leveling addons provide overlapping or incomptible functionality. Make sure to pay attention to which you install so you don’t have unnecessary addons.

Carbonite Quest Map Interface

Carbonite Quest provides a complete quest database for leveling in WotLK. It gives you an improved quest list, a directional arrow showing you the fastest route to your next objective, and an extremely powerful world map that makes questing much easier. You can record favorites to keep track of locations, targets, and general notes.

Clicking on an objective on the quest display interface immediately gives you coordinates, distance, and direction to your next quest location or turn-in. You won’t need to constantly tab out of the game to your browser to look up quest information anymore, it is all built-in to Carbonite Quest. With this addon you’ll be leveling in WotLK faster than ever before.

LightHeaded

Lightheaded Addon

Lightheaded Addon

LightHeaded is a simple addon that displays the comment text from WowHead along-side your quest log. No more tabbing in and out of WotLK to read through the Wowhead comments. Now it is all conveniently in game! LightHeaded works directly with TomTom to provide coordinate direction tracking.

QuestHelper

QuestHelper is very similar to Carbonite Quest. It automatically sorts your quests based on waypoints related to the quest, and displays the order to do them to minimize travel time. On your world map you will see green waypoints noting which quest objective to complete next, and yellow waypoints showing other objectives on your list. If you have TomTom installed, QuestTracker will automatically use it to display your next waypoint direction and distance.

TomTom

TomTom is a very simple addon that allows you to add waypoint to your world map, in Northrend, or any other continent. It also gives you an arrow showing you the distance and direction

GetToThePoint

GetToThePoint can automatically turn in quests, accept quest, and skip gossip text, when possible. It removes a few of the tedious steps necessary in questing in WotLK, letting helping your leveling go just a little faster.

DoubleWide

DoubleWide is a very basic addons that double the width of the WotLK quest log. It makes reading quest text and viewing all of the quests in your log much easier.

AutoMaton

Automaton offers all of the functionality of the other automation addons, and much more. The main options that are going to help you with leveling are: automatically repairing when you are at a vendor who can, selling of grey items, and skipping of gossip text. Automaton does much, much more however, so if you aren’t interested in all of its functions, you might prefer one of the more specialized addons.

Auto Ding

Auto Ding will help you annoy your friends and guildmates by automatically announcing each time you level! You know you’re going to do it anyway, save yourself the typing. ;)

AutoProfitX

AutoProfitX automatically sells grey and white items when you go to a vendor. Now you won’t have to hunt through your bags searching for [Severed Talon] ever again.

Inscription provides a sub-skill, known as Milling. Milling herbs allows you to create pigments which are used in creating your inscription. Herbalism is the gathering skill required by inscription, due to the herbs required for Milling.

Using Milling you can turn 5 herbs into 2 to 4 pigments, which are then combined with parchments to create glyphs and scrolls.

Warcraft Millionaire Gold Farming Guide

Warcraft Millionaire Gold Farming Guide

Warcraft Millionaire

I ran across something the other day that took me a bit by surprise. It was the site, WarcraftMillionaire.com and its owner, Brad, claimed he was on the verge of becoming the first millionaire in Wrath of the Lich King. I thought about that statement for a minute and realized that I had never seen anyone with that much gold before.

Sure, I’d seen a lot of gold. Some of my friends have over 100,000 gold, but they have been playing since the WotLK’s launch and know what they are doing. Myself, I only have a few thousand and I grind constantly to make more.

How was it that this guy had managed to do what is seemingly impossible when millions of other players have been at it for just as long and are nowhere close? I did a little more research and after a bit of looking found the video proof Brad had provided to really drive his point home.

Sure enough, in a few short minutes, Brad clicked between a small collection of characters he had on the same World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King server that each had reached the gold cap of 214,748 gold, 36 silver, 48 copper, something I hadn’t even known existed; I mean, who actually reaches the gold cap?

But there it was, in full living color – I won’t say I was shocked, because it was something much more. I have been playing this game for a long time and seeing something like that is like witnessing a World Class runner break a speed record or seeing someone scale Everest blindfolded. It just hasn’t been done before.

I had to know how he had done it; what had this player done that no one else had done before; what did see in the game that others had missed. His strategy must surely be superior, right?

The truth of the matter is that it was not nearly as superior as you would think. It seems that Brad’s friends and fellow players have been asking the same question of him for some time and so he has put together a collection of resources at his website that promises to guide the casual or even hardcore player through the same process he used to reach the upper echelons of gaming.

But, his secret was so simple I could have hit myself in the head. I’d heard it a hundred times before, but I had never heard it quite like Brad put it. It’s all in the Auction House. We all know that; we’ve been to the Auction House and we’ve seen what kind of gold it can provide, but none of us would have guessed that there was quite that much gold in it.

Suffice it to say, I have never seen such concise, well described advice on how to use the Auction House to make gold. I probably won’t reach a million gold anytime soon, but I definitely feel much more confident in my ability to run the economy on my server with an ironfist, and already the gold making rates I had always maligned have started to grow. This guide is the real deal and Brad is a WotLK genius.
